Audubon called this bird the "Missouri skylark," because he found it singing in the sky over the prairies along the upper Missouri River. Sprague's Pipit delivers its breathy flight-song while hovering high in the air, often for minutes at a time, over the northern Great Plains in summer.
In winter, it becomes an elusive skulker in the short grass of dry prairies. An unassuming bird with plain buffy plumage, Sprague’s Pipit possesses an amazing song flight, hovering on rapidly fluttering wings high above its territory, singing a lovely, downward-swirling song during bursts of gliding.
When not singing, this species is very difficult to find in its prairie and grasslands habitats, often not seen until it flushes from nearly underfoot. Sprague's pipit (Anthus spragueii) Species description: The Sprague’s pipit is a relatively small passerine endemic to the North American grasslands.
It has a plain buff colored face with a large eye-ring. The Sprague’s pipit is a ground nester that breeds and winters on open grasslands.
It feeds mostly on insects and spiders and some seeds. The adult Sprague's Pipit is a pale, slender, sparrow-sized bird with white outer tail feathers, a thin bill, pale legs, and a heavily streaked back. Adults reach a length of inches ( cm), with a wingspan of 10 inches ( cm), and a weight of to grams.
The sexes are alike. Sprague's Pipit, also known as the Missouri Skylark, is often an inconspicuous and solitary species. But on its breeding grounds, the male bird becomes a star, staging vocal flight displays that can last from 30 minutes to three hours at a time.
This aerial breeding display is thought to be the longest of any bird species. In his book Rare & Elusive Birds of North America, Connecticut naturalist and writer, William Burt, tells of the Sprague's Pipit, also known as the "Missouri Skylark." [Song of the Sprague's Pipit] "Upward he goes, in bounding spirals: two, three, four, even five-hundred feet above the plain it is supposed; then he weaves about slowly, easily.
